Spectrum TG56SE 3-in-1 Self-Propelled Petrol Lawnmower

This quality petrol rotary mower from Spectrum has been specifically designed and engineered to get the best possible results on the typical British lawn!

Delivering the power for the Spectrum TG56SE Petrol Lawnmower is a large-displacement, 173cc/4.9hp four-stroke air-cooled engine that employs fuel-saving and emission-cutting overhead-valve (OHV) technology, and which offers effortless starting, thanks to an electronic key-based ignition system.

The removable lithium battery that powers the electric starter benefits from a series of LEDs, which show how much charge is left. The charger is equipped with a light that glows red to demonstrate the battery is properly in its slot.

Also important regarding the engine on the Spectrum TG56SE is its impressive torque output – the blade will slice through thick, damp grass with the utmost ease.

The Spectrum TG56SE Petrol Lawnmower is right up there in terms of versatility, with its three cutting modes – bagging; mulching; side-discharge – making it just as at home on well-maintained formal lawns, as it is on overgrown outlying areas of your garden (all accessories are simple to fit and remove).

It’s based around a steel cutter deck, so it will impress when it comes to durability, and it has a rear-wheel self-drive for the comfortable mowing of rough and/or undulating terrain (substantial, 250mm-diameter drive wheels – on ball-bearing mounts for smoothness and longevity – provide superior traction and enhanced manoeuvrability).

With its extra-wide, 56cm cut and high-capacity, 60-litre catcher – with blockage and spillage-preventing ‘bag full’ indicator – the Spectrum TG56SE 3-in-1 Self-Propelled Petrol Lawnmower is a speedy operator, which will cover the most expansive areas with rapidity.

A soft grip on the convenient collapsible handlebar dampens uncomfortable, fatigue-inducing vibration transfer; single-lever height of cut selection from the eight settings available makes the pre-mowing set-up super simple.

The well-equipped Spectrum TG56SE also features a deck washout port – just attach your hosepipe, spin the blades, and any corrosive under-deck debris accumulation will be thoroughly removed.

I just got one of these and have to say it is amazing. Great value, easy to start with the key start and is a great mulcher. It was easy to assemble and got quick delivery

  2. Mark Wilson (verified owner)

Although value for money I would rather have spent a little bit more on a known brand mower. The break doesn’t cut off the rotary wheels immediately and the battery needs to be fully charged to start electronically otherwise a robust piece of kit, good value mower

  3. mark Thundercliffe (verified owner)

Bought the 56cm spectrum lawn mower as we have a large garden to look after.
We have a ride on so thought this would make it easier to do the edges and awkward bits .
The belt broke on the ride on so I tackled the acre of grass and large weeds with the spectrum I used the side discharge and it handle it with ease I was really impressed even though it took a couple of hours it was a great back up while the ride on gets repaired.

  4. NEIL MCHARRIE (verified owner)

    Excellent service and excellent machine

very happy 1st cut seems to be good machine TG56SE

  8. Ralph Peters

We got this to replace our Hayter Harrier 56 and CRICKEY. It is much easier to use, easier to start and operate. It leaves a great finish and has the added ability to send the grass to the side or mulch it. Very impressed.

  9. Mr Ralph Knight (verified owner)

Delivery of the machine was on time, it took only a short time to build up. First time of using made easy as the blade of 56cm is 10cm larger than my old 45 year old Honda (I just hope it lasts as long).
The down side to my new machine was that the male connection for the hose to clean the underside would not fit the female connection for my hose, I phoned up to let Compass know, I was hit with very poor customer service and to ‘go and buy a new one’, this is a machine with a 5 year warranty!
Anyway I asked to speak to a person in ‘authority’, I got a call back and was told that this was the first time that this had happened (stock answer). I was sent a new male connector the next day, this didn’t fit either, but after some alterations and a smaller ‘o’ ring all is now fine.

Product is good and so was delivery

I ordered a SpectrumTG56 lawnmower from Compass they dealt with the order promptly and was delivered within a few days. I had no problem assembling the lawnmower and tried it on some long damp lawn grass. The engine had lots of power and no problems collecting the grass,I am very pleased with the machine

  12. Scott (verified owner)

Great service and very impressive mower so far. Looked at a lot of mowers and this seemed great value for money. It is a solid machine and cuts very well with many functions as side discharge and a mulched. Even this time of year with damp grass it made very light work. Due to its size and weight it is best suited for the bigger lawns which is why I chose this model. As I said so far I rate this brand very highly.

  13. Ian Wilkinson (verified owner)

Had the TG56SE for 5 days now.
Key plus points – excellent large cutting area, steel base, great electric start that works every time. The machine stops when you empty the basket so needs restarting, relatively light. Very good mulching and side discharge facilities. Cuts wet, long grass easily. Great price for such a large, electric start, self propelled machine.
Negative – the basket is small for this size of machine.
Overall, very happy with the machine and compass – excellent service.

  14. Keith

Amazing value. 56cm Cut with key start for this price – its performance exceeded my expectations. Very happy here in Cheshire!

Thus is a great value machine packed with features. It works very well – worth every penny

  18. David Martin

I bought a Spectrum TG56SE mower last August (used for 5 whole months now in May 2026) and can report my findings. This was to replace a Honda Izy 46 mower as we have nearly an acre of woodland garden to mow and could do with a wider cutting machine. The mower turned up very quickly and was easy to complete the required part assembly, I was surprised at just how large and heavy this model is compared to the old Honda, the quality of components isn’t up there with the more expensive Honda, like hollow sharp edged wheels and an ill fitting rear sprung box flap but the motor looks like it is really up to the job and all cables and the deck look good quality. I didn’t realise but a bottle of engine oil is supplied in the box, I had already bought some.

it starts using a Li-Ion battery and key/starter motor system which is easy to charge using the supplied charger, I was initially worried if I had to empty the box 15-20 times (motor has to stop each time) whether the battery would have enough starts in it each session. I enquired and was told it would start the mower around 50 times from a full charge and I’ve had no issues with that in use. It isn’t in it’s description but the engine is also supplied with a pull cord that can be used instead of the battery if required and is easy to pull. The motor starts readily using either method and runs smoothly with little vibration through the padded handle bar. The drive is set at a quicker walking pace than the Honda but is manageable and eats up the ground quickly. The supplied ill fitting sprung box cover does spill clippings and dust which is a shame and the rear sharp edged 25cm wheels churn up damp grass etc at each end of a row, the rounded Honda wheel edges didn’t do that.

Fuel consumption is good and will run the mower for around 2 hours non-stop, I have used the side discharge fitting to mash up our autumn leaves and it worked well, no more raking up masses of leaves for us. I’ve used the collection box and that works well with a ‘full’ indicator tab that pops up, but sadly it is hidden out of the user’s view by the handles battery/key start compartment, so I need to bend backwards to see if the tag has deployed but it is a reliable working feature. When the grass is already under control and I’ve set the mower down on it’s No.2 height setting, I can remove the rear collection box, fit the supplied rear shute’s plug and use the mulch feature. This works excellently and saves stopping the mower to empty the box so cutting time is reduced significantly over an acre of lawn. The clippings are mulched so finely that you would need to look very carefully to find them. If you mulch grass that is thicker and higher then maybe a fine line of mulched clippings can be seen here and there that soon disperse over a few days.

The motor has plenty of power to cut damp moss or long grass and when finished, the mower can easily be turned on it’s side (filler cap upwards) to clean the underside with a wooden spatula and brush. I have no hose pipe accessible to use the bodies top fitted male hose fitting to clean the underside of the deck. Hopefully I can keep rust at bay for some years to come as I can’t see replacement decks in the available spares section.

In all, I think you get a lot of mower for the money (I paid £400 last year) compared to other makes, you get a very wide deck, powerful economical reliable motor and easy start systems, long may it continue.. 4 out of 5 stars due to the distorted rear cover and sharp edged wheels.
