Conventional rear-collect tractors aren’t much use when it comes to heavily overgrown grass, as the catcher will reach capacity in quick time, meaning the job will take forever, due to the number and frequency of emptying breaks. Plus, there’s a good chance the lengthy clippings will clog the chute between the cutter deck and the catcher, thereby requiring you to stop mowing and unblock it.
With a side-discharge garden tractor, none of this applies, as cuttings are direct-discharged in tidy rows to the machine’s right-hand side, where they’ll gradually wither away. If, perhaps for reasons of aesthetics, you’d rather not leave cuttings strewn across turf, you can collect them with a towed sweeper.
A further advantage of side-discharge is that, because there’s no need to drive back and forth to the compost bin, mowing time is drastically reduced.

A 98cm model aimed at areas between 6000 and 8000m2, the Mountfield MTF 98M SD employs a premium overhead-valve engine, which produces a hefty 8.7hp from a relatively compact 352cc cylinder displacement.
The OHV design of the four-stroke air-cooled motor means it runs cooler and cleaner, with less noise and vibration, and a significant reduction in the amount of costly fuel it consumes.
It might be attractively priced, but the Mountfield MTF 98M SD certainly doesn’t skimp on features – you’ll get effortless electromagnetic PTO engagement; a cup holder for on-hand refreshment; and twin blades, which combine to create a powerful under-deck airflow.
If, in addition to a rough-grass area, you’ve got a more formal area to manage, simply purchase and fit the optional mulch plug. This done, clippings will be shredded and spread across the lawn surface, where they’ll be barely visible.
